This post contains my favorite recipe for Apple Crisp.

If you pressed me, I’d have to put Apple Crisp on my top 10 favorite desserts of all time. That buttery, crunchy topping with sweet apples…I’m drooling just thinking about it.

And I tend to like a more traditional, old-fashioned dessert. They’re comforting and cozy like a warm blanket on a cold night.

In all the years I’ve been testing out Apple Crisp recipes, this one has become my favorite. When my kids were younger, after homeschool was done for the day, we’d watch cooking shows like Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee, Good Eats, and Barefoot Contessa. And it is from Barefoot Contessa that I tweaked this recipes.

I believe the only changes I made were to omit the nutmeg (love it, but just not in this) and increase the amount of crisp topping. You know how people say cupcakes are just a delivery system for frosting? Well, for me, the crisp is the best part of Apple Crisp. No hate on the apples; it’s a team effort. But the star player, at least for me, is that buttery, crunchy crisp.

Top a warm serving with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream and I’m in heaven.

And if you’re an apple dessert fan, why not check out another of my traditional desserts, Quick Apple Cake.

Ingredients

Scale

5 pounds apples

zest of one orange

zest of one lemon

2 Tbsp. freshly squeezed orange juice

2 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/2 cup sugar

2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Topping:

2 1/4 cups flour

1 cup + 2 Tbsp. sugar

1 cup + 2 Tbsp. cup brown sugar

3/4 tsp. salt

1 1/2 cups oatmeal

3/4 cup butter, diced

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13″ baking dish.

Peel, core, and cut the apples into large wedges. Combine the apples with the zests, juices, sugar, and spices. Pour into the dish.

To make the topping, combine the flour, sugars, salt, oatmeal, and cold butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the mixture is crumbly and the butter is the size of peas. DO NOT OVERMIX. Scatter evenly over the apples.

Place the crisp on a sheet pan and bake for 50-60 minutes until the top is brown and the apples are bubbly. Serve warm.
