Nothing reminds me more of eating at a diner than a Toasted Turkey Club Sandwich. As a matter of fact, I have eaten at a local diner three times in the past couple of months and two of those times this is what I ordered.  The other time they were out of turkey so I got a cheeseburger.  Big let-down.  Oh well.

Have you ever made one of these at home?  You only need a few simple ingredients and a loaf of sandwich bread to feed your family a good mix of food groups for a pretty good quick lunch or dinner.  Add a side of chips or fruit and you are good-to-go. And do not be fooled–this is a very filling meal.  I end up only able to eat half of it, but that is probably because it comes with these amazing crinkle fries at that local restaurant.  Oh man.  I don’t even need catsup with those.

I can remember having these sandwiches when I was young, so many years ago.  Mom would take me and my little sister shopping and we would go to the Woolworth’s lunch counter and she would sometimes get these or tuna sandwiches.  It was such a treat.  I miss those days, and my Mom.

I am thinking that the next time I make these sandwiches, I will whip up a batch of these for dessert.

Toasted Turkey Club Sandwich

Description

A delicious layered sandwich, reminiscent of a diner lunch in the 60’s.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 slices of sandwich bread, toasted
  • 34 slices bacon, cooked
  • 1 or 2 leaves of iceberg lettuce
  • 2 or 3 slices tomato
  • 2 slices deli turkey
  • slice of cheese (provolone or swiss would work well)
  • mustard
  • mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Toast bread slices.
  2. Mix mayonnaise and mustard together, to desired taste, and spread on one side of two bread slices and both sides of 3rd slice (this will be your middle slice).
  3. Build sandwich starting with one slice of bread, followed by your other ingredients, to preference, but be sure to put the middle slice in between.
  4. After putting on top slice, press down gently and cut into 4 diagonal quarters. Place a toothpick into each quarter to keep sandwich together. Be sure and tell your family about those toothpicks! They are not an ingredient. Trust me on that.
  5. Serve with chips or fruit.
