Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Description

Serve this coffee cake with your favorite warm beverage, or a cold glass of milk, on a cool Fall morning. Total apple and cinnamon yum.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups peeled, thinly-sliced Gala apples
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup melted butter


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400° F.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, then cut in shortening.
  3. Combine the egg, milk and vanilla, and beat lightly until well mixed. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until moistened–batter will be stiff.
  4. Spread the batter into a well-greased 8-inch square pan and arrange the sliced apples evenly over the top.
  5. Combine the cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar and sprinkle over the apples.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter over the sugar and spices and bake about 25 minutes.
  7. Serve warm.
